History Prof. Widely Quoted on New Turkish Elections

Howard Eissenstat, associate professor of history and Turkish affairs expert, has recently been widely quoted in media outlets, regarding the calling for a new mayoral election in Istanbul.

The election was won by an opposition party to President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party, the AKP, in April.

He told the German Press Agency that "The decision is a loss for the opposition, but it is also a loss for the AKP, which has long enjoyed the fig leaf of contested elections to hide the reality of authoritarianism."

Eissenstat was also quoted by the Financial Times and The Economist (both paywalls), Libération, and Al-Monitor.

National and international media often turn to Eissenstat on issues regarding Turkey. He also currently serves as a nonresident senior nonresident fellow with the Project on Middle East Democracy think tank, or POMED.
