History Prof. Widely Quoted on New Turkish Elections
Howard Eissenstat, associate professor of history and Turkish affairs expert, has recently been widely quoted in media outlets, regarding the calling for a new mayoral election in Istanbul.
The election was won by an opposition party to President Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party, the AKP, in April.

He told the German Press Agency that "The decision is a loss for the opposition, but it is also a loss for the AKP, which has long enjoyed the fig leaf of contested elections to hide the reality of authoritarianism."
